Memphis City Council Listens to Frayser Residents
L-R: Memphis City Councilman Bill Boyd, Councilman Myron Lowry, Councilman Kemp Conrad, Frayser Resident Debra Lovelace, Councilman Harold Collins, Councilwoman Janis Fullilove, Councilman Lee Harris, Councilman Shea Flinn and Councilman Jim Strickland.
More than ten Frayser residents and stakeholders attended the Memphis City Council Budget Committee meeting today in support of capital improvements to Denver Park located in the Frayser community. Each supporter of park improvements proudly wore stickers displaying the 38127 zip code which encompasses the Frayser community. The Frayser community made its case for improvements to the once gang ruled park totaling just under $1 million dollars.
Memphis police officers with the Community Outreach Program (COP) were also in attendance at the budget committee meeting to show support. More than a year ago the Memphis Police Department and residents around the park joined together to retake control of Denver Park. Since then, the community has been able to enjoy the park by having family friendly events for all to enjoy.
Mrs. Debra Lovelace, President Denver Park Neighborhood Association, spoke to the budget committee as to why they should follow through with the city's promise to improve the park. Improvement plans are complete and now it is time for the city to fund the park's plan. Councilman Shea Flinn agreed by expressing $1.1 million could be used for improvements to Denver Park and also for road repairs in Frayser. After deliberations on the park, the budget committee voted to add improvements of Denver Park to the city budget. The budget is set to go before city council before July 1, 2013, when the new fiscal year begins. For more information about budget talks regarding Denver Park, click here.
